Sound leadership is crucial at the top level of A-one+, given the multimillion-pound values and geographic scopes of our contracts. With a myriad of factors to consider, the company needs our finest managerial talent working as the A-one+ executive management team for a sole purpose – to be one team delivering highway excellence.
I have worked in human resources for over 30 years, gaining experience in a wide range of industries including manufacturing and retail.
I joined the A-one+ joint venture in May 2007 just as the business was expanding into Area 10.
Since then I have led an integrated HR delivery team, on behalf of our joint venture partners, to ensure our culture aligns with the A-one+ vision and values and to support any changes necessary to maintain our reputation for great delivery.
In a career spanning 35 years I have worked on a wide range of projects in Manchester, Kuwait, Hong Kong, West Midlands, Devon, Oldham and Sheffield.
Over 10 years has been in senior management roles in Areas 9, 1, 13 and 10 of the strategic road network and since August 2012 in my current role as general manager of Area 12 in the beautiful location of Yorkshire and Humber.
It was sold to me as the ‘best job in the world’ – and I feel that it probably is.
I have a great team who pride themselves on doing a great job and I am immensely proud we have another five years to show how well A-one+ can deliver an asset support contract.
Starting my career training as a surveyor in open cast coal mining I quickly progressed to the energy and water sector as commercial director for a ten years dealing with non-regulated utilities. More recently I was projector director for DLR during the London Olympics before moving to CH2M developing the HS2 rail route from London to Crewe and heading up the successful bid to be delivery partner. I enjoy managing teams of people, dealing with customers and the day to day surprises of operations and maintenance work. As a maintenance contractor we need to be innovative in finding ways of keeping the roads open and safe and our workforce free from harm while delivering the investment need to sustain our road networks to underpin economic development.
As managing director of A-one+ my goal is to deliver a successful, safe and sustainable business for our people and our client. I am committed to driving A-one+ forward and to ensuring that we remain maintenance provider of choice and the “go to” company for highway management solutions.
I would describe myself as a pragmatic individual who keeps an eye on results and outcomes and I am driven to achieve my goals.
I have a passion for safety and believe that everybody has the right to come to work without the fear of accidents; it threads throughout everything I do.
I strive to ensure the customer is getting the best quality and service we can give and I am fiercely proud of the fact that in my role I am responsible for supporting the economy through maintaining our strategic road network and keeping the travelling public and business traffic on the move and satisfied with the service they receive from Highways England.
I am commercial director for A-one+ and responsible for accounts, finance and procurement. I work very closely with the joint venture board, the directors and general managers to ensure we add value, offer transparency, create efficiencies and manage our commercial contracts in the best way possible.
I have been working in the highway maintenance industry for over 30 years with the majority of my experience being in highways and bridges maintenance and design of the strategic road network.
For 15 years I worked in client capacity for a local highway authority.
I have been a part of the A-one+ joint venture since 2007 and currently as Business Support Director working as a member of the Executive Management Team. The focus of my work over the past decade has been in business development, management systems and continual improvement. I am hugely proud of our achievements over the years and look forward to many more successes.
My immediate remit also includes handing over heading of our Area 4 contract in Kent and Sussex.
