Here at A-one+, there are numerous examples of staff members at every level of engineering qualifications. Within our company, support is available at all of them:

• Technician engineer (EngTech) – Level 3 diploma, HND or foundation degree
• Incorporated engineer (IEng) – Bachelor’s degree or alternate routes
• Chartered engineer (CEng) – Four-year integrated MEng degree

For those who thrive in this setup, A-one+ can support their applications for engineering scholarships to aid their learning. Two common avenues are to apply with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST).

Scholarships attract the highest calibre of applicants who will go to great lengths to attain their engineering technician qualifications. Whenever possible, A-one+ will help staff to apply for scholarships to improve their career prospects.

Aspiring chartered engineers can use their professional experience with A-one+ to enter industry competitions that will place them in an even stronger position to pass their review. In the past, some A-one+ staff have harnessed their experience to excel in technical paper competitions and add yet more weight to their chartered candidacy.

Award-Winning STEM Support

In November 2015, we received the Team of the Year accolade at the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards for ambassadorial efforts in providing STEM support throughout the region.

A couple of years earlier, A-one+ discovered some staff were using their own time to support STEM initiatives. Today, however, there is now a group of award-winning STEM ambassadors who strive to promote engineering among schools and colleges in numerous local communities.

STEM Ambassador Group

There are few companies to rival the scale of our STEM Ambassador Group, which is overseen by a dedicated chair. This individual is tasked to promote STEM in local schools by arranging events and co-ordinating the efforts of participating A-one+ team members.

In our company, STEM is so highly prioritised that staff who participate in the Ambassador Group are granted paid leaves of absence for this work. This is to give them the freedom to attend events and excel in this duty without having to worry about their workload.

As for the events, these span a wide range of activities, with examples including school visits, civil engineering careers fairs, Women in Engineering (WISE) events and Considerate Constructor working groups.

The Junior and Mid-Level Professionals UK Network (JuMP) is a CH2M initiative established to foster the development of skills within the company.
Accelerated Development
Since being set up in 2012, JuMP has already been integral in attracting, developing and retaining the best civil engineering talent in the industry. Each staff member who signs up for JuMP will benefit from accelerated professional development during the junior and mid-level stages of their career.

Voluntary Support

JuMP is operated as a self-contained network of voluntary colleagues within parent company CH2M and A-one+. Incredibly, these dedicated individuals give up time to help their younger teammates to strengthen their career prospects.

How it Works

Each year, the network has an annual leadership panel tasked with deciding, organising and delivering developmental initiatives. These come in many different types in order to improve members across the broad range of engineering skills needed to excel.

Make Your Own Choices

The strength of the network is that JuMP members are given the freedom to tailor their own development. Quite simply, this is done by selecting the training courses and events that align best with your professional strengths and aspirations. Along the way, successes and lessons are recorded to reinforce members’ improvements.
