Hanging Hard Hats
The recent introduction of the ground breaking industry first A-one+ safety helmets to our staff has left us with an excess of the traditional style construction hard hat that we now cannot use.
We came up with a way to use the hard hats AND use the opportunity to teach local school children a bit about our work and the environment.
And so the ‘Hard Hat Challenge’ was created.
We took a few of our hard hats and some enthusiastic ambassadors from our STEM* team along to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, in Castleford. The afternoon started with a presentation to the class about A-one+ which included an interactive discussion about our company and civil engineering as a career opportunity.
We went on to talk about how the work that we do has an impact on the local environment and what have to do to overcome that by re-using, recycling and reducing our carbon footprint where possible. After this the pupils were invited to create their own environmental pledge for the summer.
The rest of the session was spent in the outdoor classroom transforming the hard hats into beautiful hanging baskets where we used the opportunity to talk about how important health and safety is for our roles and the work that we carry out.
First and second prizes were awarded by the teacher who joined parents in praising the event.
The environmental pledges produced by the class demonstrated to us that the afternoon was a huge success and we are already planning the next one.
Another of our teams has used the surplus stock of hats to help hard to reach groups by donating them to the charity Bounce Back Project where they are being used to create more amazing hanging baskets. Bounce Back Project helps to retrain offenders for the construction industry.
