Four Million Milestone

As of 31 January 2020, our Area 12 team reached four million working hours and two years without a reportable incident, a direct result of the efforts A-one+  has put into safety and wellbeing, inclusion, health and environment.

The team in Area 12 covers Yorkshire and Humberside, we transferred to a new asset support contract in June 2016 and since we’ve been working hard to exceed the target of 4.65 million hours set under the previous contract.

Launching the award-winning WISHES which stands for Wellbeing, Inclusion, Safety, Health and Environment Strategy in 2016 has been fundamental for developing the right behaviours and management tools to achieve success. We update the WISHES each year using intelligence from safety observations, industry awareness and parent company best practice with objectives aligned to business strategy and priorities specific to each business area.

Our WISHES approach is through behaviour-based safety, encouraging individuals to do the right thing because they want to and not because they must and, supporting that with robust procedures and processes.

Behavioural change is linked to continuous improvement, fostering engagement between management and workface operational staff, allowing our people to innovate, improve and take ownership.

We’ve implemented several tools as part of the change process;

  • ‘Be Safe’ cards for new employees, empowering them to stop work if they feel it’s unsafe to continue
  • WISHES booklets and posters and visual reporting tools
  • Cultural behavioural training and refresher workshops
  • A-one+ Safety App for reporting observations and ideas
  • Start of shift briefing incorporating safe behaviour
  • Safety stand downs and supervisor away day workshops
  • A supply chain safety improvement group

Achieving the four million milestone is reward for our people and evidence of the crucial role they play for themselves, for each other and for our industry.”

Since the development of the A-one+ Safety App the number of observations has more than doubled and each entry is reviewed and actioned with managers and supervisors at a weekly meeting, the details of this provides A-one+ and our parent companies with the intelligence to identify trends, mitigate risk and a creates a platform to raise the bar.

A-one+ is a shared joint venture between Colas, Costain and Jacobs and a key provider of integrated highway services carrying out work on behalf of Highways England. The support of each parent company is central to A-one+ achieving success.
