Women in Engineering
National Women in Engineering Day is an annual event which helps to raise awareness of the opportunities and relevance of women in the industry.
To celebrate women in engineering and support and encourage more women to consider a career in engineering or construction, we developed a series of activities to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day (NWED).
The activities encouraged staff to take the opportunity to understand a bit more about how the role of women in engineering has changed and continues to change in today’s environment and what they can do to lend that encouragement.
The activities celebrating NWED are backed up by an annual programme of activities including bringing your child to work day and extensive primary and secondary school visits to engage with children, which all have a major focus on opportunities for women to choose engineering.
During the day, members of the ambassador group and our senior leadership team wore specially designed T-shirts with the #notjustforboys slogan to demonstrate their commitment to encouraging more women into engineering and to supporting their ongoing development and career opportunities.
Our STEM Ambassadors also arranged a number of activities during the day including a women focused quiz, portraits of women from around the business with a personal profile and story, features on famous women engineers, an unconscious bias video in the canteen for all staff to view, and publicity of NWED through our social media feeds.
The day created a real buzz around the office from technicians to senior leaders.
