Lean Pavement Scheme

Background

The M62 Eggborough J34-J35 required extensive resurfacing and safety barrier replacement.

Solution

We applied Lean principles during scheme development to improve our levels of productivity during closures. The goal was to maintain a minimum amount of disruption for road users and to achieve efficiency savings by maximising activity during fewer closures.

The work was completed using a blend of night time and lane closures over a 3 week period with surfacing works completed in just 4 nights. This meant laying an average of 700 tonnes of material each night and in total 2,838 tonnes which is over one and a half times the size of the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier flight deck.

We also laid 1,950 road studs and 10,758 metres of white lining; end to end the white lining would take almost 6 minutes to drive along in a car travelling 70mph.

265 metres of safety barrier (vehicle restraint system) was renewed which is the equivalent of nearly 3 times the height of Big Ben (renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012).

The scheme was completed with no recordable accidents and in record time giving customers a better experience and providing savings to the client.
