Apprenticeship of the Year

Apprentice Nicola Ward has been awarded ‘Apprenticeship of the Year Award 2018’ in the Construction (Built Environment) category for Northern Skills Group, during a special ceremony on 8 March at Middlesbrough College.

Nicola, age 19, is in the second and final year of her apprenticeship, studying for a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment, alongside a NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians. Nicola is based at the A-one+ Design Centre in Darlington which provides specialist design services and support to our area asset support contracts in Yorkshire, Humber, Kent, Sussex and parts of Surrey and Hampshire.

Nicola said: “I am enjoying my apprenticeship with A-one+ because I am able to gain valuable practical experience surrounded by knowledgeable and supportive team and, I am really happy with how far I have come so far and want to excel in a civil engineering career.”

Northern Skills Group, which is part of Middlesbrough College is an expert provider of apprenticeships, employer-led training and retraining and works with over 2000 businesses in the north east and Yorkshire.

Nicola is well ahead of programme in her studies and was nominated by Northern Skills Group Assessor, Stephen Coates, owing to the progress she has made on her course; the quality, consistency, and timely delivery of her coursework; alongside the professionalism shown throughout the year.

Although not due to complete her current studies until this summer, Nicola is already exploring opportunities that will allow her to meet her aim of becoming a professionally qualified engineering technician, and member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (Eng Tech MICE).

Well done Nicola, well deserved recognition.
