About A-One
About Us

Any world-class athlete will tell you that winning a gold medal is one thing, but maintaining performance to scoop a second or third is quite another.

However, since our inception in 2003, A-one - Halcrow’s joint venture with Colas which became A-one+ when joined by Costain in 2007 - seems to have created the right formula for ongoing success.

Following our meteoric rise to become the UK Highways Agency’s main vehicle for highway management, A-one+ remains the country’s leading Managing Agent Contractor (MAC) – having secured contracts in Area 7, East Midlands; Area 10, North West; Area 12, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire; and Area 14, North East. This totals 32 per cent of England’s motorway and trunk road network and is the maximum market share permitted by the Highways Agency.

In 2003, we won the Area 14 contract worth £147 million (which expired 30th June 2010), in 2007. We won the Area 10 contract worth £300 million in 2005.

In 2009 we won the contracts for the £200 million Area 12, and the £220 million Area 7 projects. Now, with Area 14 won back for another 5-7 years, our annual turnover will increase to over £190 million per annum and boost the forward order book to in excess of £750 million.

There are lots of reasons why we are successful, but understanding what the client is looking for in terms of service delivery is key to our success, and remains our highest priority after safety. Having just one client means we can shape our organisation and our systems to deliver what that client wants.

An astonishing four-contract win pushes us to the top. We know that ‘our family, our work, and our people’ help to demonstrate how we unquestionably deliver our vision:
